Foundations

Description

This program contains 3 learning courses of material: House Placement-Slab on Grade, Foundations: Slab on Grade, and Foundations: Basements and Crawlspaces.

This technical training is for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge on house placement, foundation construction, and the critical checkpoints for quality control at each stage of foundation construction.

House Placement-Slab on Grade contains four modules:

  • Module 1, The key house placement issues, describes three important tasks: getting the right house in the right place, getting the house elevation and other lot elevations right, and making sure the home is placed on good load-bearing soil. It also gives a brief overview of how the plot plan, the site plans, and the house plans are used to place the house correctly.
  • Module 2, Placing the house and setting the grade, explains how to work with the surveyor using the plot plan to get the chosen house model with the correct options in the right place on the lot. It also explains how to use the grading information on the site plans to confirm that the lot will be graded correctly.
  • Module 3, Preventing soil problems, explains why the load-bearing soil is one of the major factors used to determine the foundation design. It also shows what to look for on the soils report to confirm that the bearing soil is suitable for the foundation that will be built on it. Finally, it explains what to do if you encounter unfavorable soil conditions.
  • Module 4, Excavating the slab area, covers monolithic slab considerations and stem wall slab considerations. For each, it gives a brief overview of the excavation process, explains how to make sure the ground is excavated per the site plans, plot plan, and house plans, and details the process of locating formwork. It also explains what to check in preparation for formwork inspection.

The Foundations: Slab on Grade course walks you through slab-on-grade foundation construction, and shows you the most critical checkpoints for quality control at each stage. If you conduct effective quality control inspections during foundation construction, you'll prevent delays, reduce construction costs, and minimize warranty callbacks.

Foundations: Slab on Grade addresses:

  • Verifying that the foundation is built to plan.
  • Communicating key specifications to subcontractors.
  • Preventing water and moisture intrusion.
  • Preventing structural damage.

The Foundations: Basement and Crawlspaces course walks you through basement and crawlspace foundation construction, and shows you the most critical checkpoints for quality control at each stage. If you conduct effective quality control inspections during foundation construction, you'll prevent delays, reduce construction costs, and minimize warranty callbacks.

Foundations: Basements and Crawlspaces addresses:

  • Verifying that the home is built to plan.
  • Communicating key requirements to subcontractors.
  • Preventing water and moisture intrusion.
  • Preventing structural damage.
