Description

This program contains 3 learning courses of material: Framing: Floors, Framing: Walls, and Framing: Roofs.

This technical training is for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge on framing floors, walls and roofs to ensure your systems follow the plans, comply with code requirements, meet company quality standards, and result in a high level of customer satisfaction.

Framing: Floors walks through the floor construction process, showing what you should check to ensure that the flooring system complies with codes, follows the plans and specifications, and results in a high level of customer satisfaction. It contains five modules:

  • Module 1, The floor system, contains two lessons. First, we'll discuss the floor system. Then we'll talk about how beams, floor joists, and other framing members in a floor system carry and transfer loads and handle the stresses placed on them.
  • Module 2, Beams and the sill plate, contains three lessons. First, we'll discuss beam installation. Then we'll talk about different types of beams and their installation. Then we'll walk through the installation process for the sill plate, showing the key checkpoints.
  • Module 3, Floor joists, contains five lessons. We'll discuss the different joist types: dimensional lumber joists, I-joists, and floor trusses, and show what to look for when you're checking their installations. Then we'll discuss the installation of joist hangers, showing the key checkpoints.
  • Module 4, Cantilevers and rough openings, contains three lessons. First, we'll discuss the requirements for non load-bearing cantilevers. Then we'll cover load-bearing cantilevers. Finally, we'll show what to look for when you're checking rough openings for stairwells in the floor system.
  • Module 5, Subflooring, contains two lessons. First, we'll walk through the process of how subfloor panels are installed. Then we'll show what to look for when you're checking the subflooring installation.

Framing: Walls walks through wall framing, and shows you what to check along the way to ensure that the interior and exterior wall details follow the plans, comply with code requirements, and meet company standards for construction quality. The course contains four modules:

  • Module 1, Wall systems, contains three lessons. First, we'll illustrate the components in a stud wall. Then we'll talk about the loads walls must carry and transfer. Finally, we'll discuss how the walls must resist shear from wind and seismic loads.
  • Module 2, Stud wall construction and details, contains five lessons. First, we'll show you what to look for when you're checking conventional stud wall construction. Then we'll discuss panelization framing. Next, we'll describe OVE framing techniques. Finally, we'll talk about the major checkpoints for rough openings, bracing, and sheathing.
  • Module 3, Structural requirements, contains two lessons. First, we'll illustrate the anchors, straps, hold downs, and tie plates that keep the levels of the structure together in high winds and earthquakes. Then we'll discuss shear panel requirements.
  • Module 4, Interior details, contains four lessons. We'll talk about fireblocking, draftstopping, interior blocking for permanent fixtures, and nailers for drywall. We'll show you what to look for when you're checking each of these interior features.

Framing: Roofs shows what you should check to ensure that the roof system performs as expected. The course contains three modules:

  • Module 1, Roof framing basics, contains four lessons. First, we'll illustrate the components of various roof systems and discuss the types of roofs built in residential construction. Next, we'll discuss the slope of the roof and how it affects roof construction. Then we'll talk about the loads roof must carry and transfer. Finally, we'll describe the tie-down connections required in some regions to resist wind uplift.
  • Module 2, Roof systems, contains seven lessons. We'll walk through both truss and rafter construction, talking about the problems to avoid and the things you should check to avoid them. After that, we'll discuss roof sheathing installation.
  • Module 3, Roof features, contains three lessons. First, we'll talk about what to check on rough openings for dormers and skylights. Next, we'll discuss cornice framing. Finally, we'll cover crickets and saddles that divert water from the roof, explaining what to  heck to ensure that these features will work properly.

This online learning experience has been designed to allow busy industry professionals to engage in the material at their own pace.
